      Urdu language poetry actually emerged from Arabic and Persian literature. Urdu poetry is a very important and prominent element of Pakistan and Indian culture. In early stages Urdu poetry was a mixture of several other languages that were spoken and understood in Hindustan. The pioneers of Urdu poetry are Amir Khusro and Kabir, later on several other Urdu poets emerged and created many beautiful poetries and rested alive in the history of Urdu forever by their great work in Urdu poetry. These names are Ghalib, Mir Taqi Mir, Momin Khan Momin, Allama Iqbal, Mir Dard, Dagh Dehalvi, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, are the greatest names of Urdu poetry. Before partition to get rid of East Indian rule many poets wrote to awaken Muslims and Hindus they arouse the spirit in Hindu and Muslim to fight for independence.

Popular most and renown names regarding Urdu poetry belongs to Pakistan, like Amjad Islam Amjad, Ahmad Faraz, Perveen Shakir(late), Fakhra Batool, Munir niazi(late), Faiz ahmad faiz(late), Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi(late), Noshi Gilani, Syed Wasi Shah, Nisar Terabi, Kinzul Iman Akhter, Mannan Qadeer Manna, Shezad Ahmad, Farhat Abbas Shah, Qaiser Shehzad, Bashir Baddar, Jamil Uddin Aali and Saleem Kausar.

Popular genres of Urdu poetry are ghazal, doha, rubai, qata and nazm etc. These kinds also have types and sub type. Poetry usually expresses the feelings and deep emotions. Not only Urdu poetry but also Urdu funny poetry has great value and there are lots of poets who are writing and creating Urdu funny poetry, these poets are Syed zameer Jaffrey (late), Ata Ul Haq Qasmi, Ata Ullah Khan Jedi, Dr. Anwar Masood and etc.

In Urdu poetry usually every poet writes with his pen name, i.e. “Tkhallus” like Mirza Asad Ullah Khan Ghalib used to write “Ghalib” in his poetry, this custom of Urdu poetry is very popular and almost all the poets have pen name. Whenever a poet creates his/her new poetry he make it listen to everybody through Urdu mushaiera (poetic exposition). New poets can also get a chance to make they appear in Urdu poetry’s world.
